Fitting-in in a World Falling Apart

I sometime grapple with the sensation of not fitting in, of standing at odds with the prevailing norms and expectations of society. We've all felt that pang of isolation, that sense of being out of place. I have to remind myself, sometimes daily, that this discomfort may be a sign of something far greater. I heard a saying a few days ago that has stuck with me – “Don’t drop the ball.  It is not someone else’s responsibility to carry what you have been given.”  It tells me that there is a purpose that only I can complete.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that God has placed us in this exact moment in history for a reason. We are not mistakes of chance, but deliberate creations of a divine hand. Our lives are part of a larger narrative, woven together by the threads of countless individual stories. Even when we can't see the bigger picture, we can find solace in the understanding that our very existence plays a vital role in the unfolding of God's master plan.

A Larger Purpose

Throughout history, there have been countless individuals who've stood on the fringes of societal norms, driven by a sense of calling that transcends the ordinary. From visionaries to artists, reformers to revolutionaries, their struggles to fit into the world around them were often the result of their deep connection to a purpose larger than themselves. Consider the life of Noah, who was tasked with building an ark amidst the disbelief of those around him, or the apostle Paul, who underwent immense trials to spread the teachings of Christ.

Drawing inspiration from Romans 8:28, we find assurance that our seeming misfit status is not in vain. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Our struggles, our feelings of not belonging, and our moments of doubt are not exempt from God's providence. In fact, they are essential components of the journey towards fulfilling the purpose He has ordained for us.

A Purpose for Others

We are here for a reason, and our experiences are integral to the purpose God has set before us. In the end, our journey is not about fitting into this world as it is, but rather about shaping it through the lens of our divine purpose to be a light of God to cause others to want to know him. With each step forward, I inch closer to the realization that my existence is not defined by how well I fit in, because it’s actually not about me at all.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)

As a Disciple, it is so important for us to put on the Full Armor of GOD every day and especially before preaching the gospel. Be bold in your faith and stand tall in your armor with Truth and Grace. Paul the Apostle explains here in Ephesians 6:10-18.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
